Tornado F3

The end

The Tornado F3 is now out of service.

I went to Leeming on 24th March to see some of of the last F3's in service arrive for scrapping.

I remember well the first Tornado F3 arriving. Now the Yorkshire base after being the home to 11 23 & 25 Squadrons is now the final resting place for this Air Defence variant of the Tornado

.

Much has been said about the aircraft but i feel it developed into a very useful air defender for the Royal Air Force despite it's chequered start.

111 squadron  have been bringing the aircraft into Leeming over a period of time. 24th saw ZE 168 HH and ZE 983 HL arrive for thier last rites.

There escort ZE734 JU in special marks returned to Leuchars to return a few days later.

I hope you like my tribute to these aircraft in the Military Gallery.

Please feel free to contact me at my e mail address on this site with your thoughts on this aircraft and indeed anything aviation related.

Sad to see them go along with the Harrier.Unfortunately the role that they were designed for in the early 70s has long gone.
